“Our first job as teachers is to make sure that we learn our students, that we connect with them on a real level…”

James Ford

Students who feel a genuine connection to their teachers:

  • Are more open to learning
  • Are more willing to take risks in exploring information
  • Show increased emotional intelligence

Genuine care for students is the connection that allows information to be passed on. Without a fantastic student-teacher relationship, musical development will be at best, slow, and at worst, discouraging.

Our Curriculum

Because of the importance of student-teacher relationships, I’ve designed our curriculum to encourage continued dialogue, and protect the flow of lessons week to week.

All musical concepts are recurring. There are no “advanced” musical concepts, only simple ones that have been built upon and improved over many years.

Since the language of music is the same no matter how long you have been playing, we explore a different musical skill each month, through the lens of the current repertoire.

This allows students to have some input into what they are learning, while they still receive the benefits of intentionally thought out music education curriculum.

Our Teachers

All of our teachers:

  • Have a strong ability to teach and play.
  • Value the students as individuals.
  • Care about developing the whole person through education.
  • Understand the impact of a long-standing student-teacher relationship.

Teachers have the potential to make a life-shaping impression on your children. P287 teachers consider this an honor, and something not to be taken lightly.

While each teacher may have their own strengths and personal style, we all adhere to the same monthly curriculum, so no matter who is teaching your children, we can be sure the lessons are of the highest quality.

Student-Teacher Relationships

From the core of what we do, P287 music teachers create an environment that helps your children thrive. That is because we believe that great relationships aren’t optional, they are essential.

A study from the June 2018 issue of the American Economic Review showed that elementary school students thrive and perform better when they are kept with the same teacher for multiple years as compared to students who switch teachers yearly, or even daily.

Kirk Olson, Author of The Invisible Classroom writes ““When the humanity is removed from education, so is much of its effectiveness”

There is a proven correlation between a teacher’s ability to connect with a student, and the student’s progress.

We are a group of music teachers who care deeply about people and seek to bring out the best in them through music.
